Time to change the cartridge: how to recognise the need to replace it in a pod system?

One of the main differences between pod systems and disposable devices is the presence of a replaceable cartridge. This solution lets you significantly extend the gadget’s service life and, if needed, change only the liquid container while keeping the same battery module. The cartridge consists of an atomiser and a liquid reservoir and can be disposable and hermetically sealed, or refillable yourself. The second option is, of course, far more convenient and practical — users do not have to constantly buy new tanks, and by throwing a large number of used disposable devices into the bin we pollute the environment with harmful plastic waste, which does not break down naturally and is hard to recycle.

So it is no surprise that refillable cartridges, into which the pod owner periodically tops up liquid as it evaporates, are the most popular. Their service life depends on vaping intensity, the liquid composition and many other factors. Most often devices fail due to wear from contamination of the cotton wick or burnout of the atomiser coil. But this process does not happen all at once — there are fairly obvious symptoms that indicate the cartridge’s resource is exhausted and it needs replacing soon:

  • an unpleasant bitter taste when vaping;
  • liquid leaking from the container;
  • reduced vapour density and flavour richness;
  • noticeable heating of the battery mod.

In general, any deterioration in taste signals problems in the device’s operation, but you do not always necessarily need to change the tank. A vape can often turn bitter when the liquid runs out. Bitterness can also be felt due to burning of the coil or the cotton if it is poorly soaked with liquid. In that case, if the cartridge design allows it, you can replace only the atomiser, whose service life is usually 7–10 days, while the tank itself, with careful use, can last at least a month.

The most common vaper mistakes that lead to premature atomiser failure:

  • Overly intensive use with very frequent breaks, when the coil overheats and does not have time to cool down.
  • Using a free (direct-lung) draw instead of a cigarette-style one.
  • Mixing different liquids in one container.
  • Overly long (more than 5 seconds) or double puffs that overload the atomiser of a low-power pod.
  • A break of less than 10 seconds between puffs, so the wick does not have time to soak properly and the coil burns out quickly.
  • Using a liquid whose parameters are not suitable for the specific device.
  • Untimely refilling of the cartridge, when remnants of old liquid dry on the tank walls and then spoil not only the aroma but also the atomiser components.

The atomiser’s service life can also be affected by the liquid composition — vaping sweet mixes containing flavourings with sweeteners contributes to accelerated cartridge wear. They quickly contaminate the cotton wick, causing it to scorch, so fans of sweet liquid have to change tanks more often.

So, for your device to work without any problems, you need to constantly monitor the liquid level in the container and top it up in time — if there is not enough liquid to soak the wick well, the coil can burn out very quickly. The cartridge should be refilled regularly, not left empty, and the liquid composition chosen correctly. The optimal PG/VG ratio for pods is considered to be 50/50, at most 40/60 — using thicker mixes is not recommended because they soak the cotton poorly, which also leads to premature atomiser failure.
